In Nova Scotia, 15% of Blacklegged Deer ticks (minimum estimate*) are infected with the Lyme Disease-causing bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi).
Up to 50% of Wood ticks or American Dog Ticks may be infected with the bacteria, Bartonella spp☆. Which can cause Cat Scratch Fever and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Prevention is key to avoiding tick-bourne illnesses.
Fewer than half of people found to be infected with tick-transmitted bacteria recall a tick bite. Of those that are knowingly bitten by a tick and infected with the bacteria, only 1 out of 5 will display a characteristic “bullseye rash”. It is largely a disease that takes hold silently.
Anti-tick practices, vigilant self-checks and utilizing available herbal remedies are the cornerstone of prevention. Botanical medicines provide an additional protection by either detering tick bites or inhibiting bacterial replication as much as possible soon after a bite. Thus, increasing the chances that antibiotic therapy is able to completely irradicate the infection before it takes hold (Chronic Lyme).
